Separett’s quick guide
Share
Do you know which municipal regulations apply, or what you need to consider when installing a toilet? At Separett, we know toilets, which is why we have created a short guide for you, with things that may be useful to know before choosing your waterless toilet.

Municipal regulations
First and foremost, it is the municipality that determines how you should handle latrine waste, urine and urine-mixed flush water from toilets, as well as which regulations apply to installation. The regulations may vary between municipalities, as each municipality bases its rules on local environmental conditions.
The regulations concerning latrines are intended to prevent any disease-causing bacteria from spreading outside the toilet or latrine compost. For this reason, the regulations include requirements stating that the base must be sealed and that the material must not be spread until at least twelve months after the final addition.
As a general rule, urine may be spread on growing crops on your own property, but there are also municipalities that do not allow urine to be spread. Some municipalities require the property to be of sufficient size in order for urine spreading to be permitted.
Always contact the environmental and health protection department, or the equivalent authority, in the municipality where the toilet solution is to be used and installed, so that you choose an option that is accepted by the municipality. Many municipalities have published their regulations on their websites. It is the municipality’s environmental committee that decides what you may and may not do. When the municipality assesses your application to install a new toilet solution, their starting points are that the solution:
- Must be able to meet the level of protection required for the location
- Must be designed for five year-round residents, even if it concerns a holiday home
- Must be supplemented by some form of treatment for your bathing, dishwashing and laundry water, also known as greywater
As municipal regulations have a major impact on how you may and should handle the waste, it is therefore important to consider the following when choosing a toilet solution:
- How waste handling should be managed
- Contact your municipality early in the process to find out which regulations apply where you intend to install the toilet
Installation and placement
Different toilet solutions require different installations. Also keep in mind that installation is extremely important for the toilet’s function and performance. For example, if you have a space underneath or some distance away from where the toilet is to be placed, the number of possible solutions increases. It is therefore important to keep the following in mind at an early stage:
- Always think about the toilet early in the building or renovation process
- Check that your space is large enough for your toilet solution and waste handling
- Do not forget to purchase Separett ventilation kits for a complete installation
If you are at all unsure, contact us at Separett and we will help you.
Available space and site suitability
If there is a space underneath or a few metres away from the toilet room, the number of possible solutions increases. When a property is to be built or renovated, it is therefore important to decide as early as possible which solution will be used.
The space beneath the floor can be used as a composting room or for collecting the waste in a latrine container for outdoor latrine composting. Check that the space is sufficient for the solution you choose.
Where urine infiltration is permitted, factors such as the suitability of the soil for infiltration, as well as the distance to surface water, drinking water sources and property boundaries, are decisive. In order to determine the suitability of the soil and the distance to groundwater, test pits often need to be dug.
Comfort, handling and cost
This is of great importance to everyone, and it is therefore important to consider it early when choosing a toilet solution. What is important to you when it comes to comfort and waste handling? We recommend that you always use our accessories for each product for the best possible comfort and a better experience. Do you want to compost and use the urine as fertiliser, or do you only want ash as the residual product?
A large part of choosing a toilet solution also depends on your budget. How much can the toilet solution cost? Investment and operating costs vary between the different alternatives. The higher your requirements for comfort and minimal maintenance, the higher the cost, both in terms of investment and operation. This is also self-evident.

Finding the right toilet solution
It can be difficult to know which toilet solution is right for you and your needs. That is why it is important early in the process to decide, for example, how involved you want to be in waste handling, what budget you have and where the toilet will be placed.
At Separett, we know toilets. If you are at all unsure, you can contact us and we will help you with your choice. We have a solution that suits you and your needs. Below you will find a short description of our models, their function and handling.
Incinerating toilet
Incinerating toilets are becoming increasingly popular and are the toilet solution growing the most in holiday homes across the Nordic region. They have also become popular as a permanent solution. The simple use and the comfort of having clean ash as the only residual product, which can be spread as plant fertiliser in the garden, contribute to the positive development of the incinerating toilet. Skip sewage, digging and major installations. All an incinerating toilet requires is electricity and ventilation.
To ensure good function over time, it is important that the installation is carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations and that the toilet is then maintained according to the instructions. It is not particularly difficult, but it is important that it is done correctly.
We have several incinerating toilets in our range: Family II, Nova and Nova II. If you are looking for a complete and simple toilet solution with minimal waste handling, our incinerating toilets is a perfect option for you.

Urine-diverting toilet
Our range includes several different types of urine-diverting toilet solutions that are suitable for different needs and situations. Thanks to the separation of urine and solid waste, odours are significantly reduced, and the small amount of odour that remains is efficiently ventilated out by means of a built-in fan. The toilet requires either electricity or a battery/solar cells and ventilation in order to function. In addition, the toilet can basically be placed wherever you want.
Our urine-diverting toilet Villa is, and has long been, very popular all over the world and is appreciated for its user-friendliness and simplicity. With a robust design and high capacity for several people in the household, this is a toilet that works excellently in many locations, such as both holiday homes and permanent homes.
Another toilet in the same category is Tiny, which has been specially developed for tiny homes and smaller installations or spaces such as motorhomes, caravans, boats and hunting cabins. If you have a smaller space, Tiny is for you. Here, depending on how you live, you also have the option to choose how you want to handle the urine. You can collect the urine in a urine container or route it out through a urine drain.
Our latest addition is Weekend Prime, a urine-diverting toilet developed for those who need a simple, reliable and electricity-free solution. Based on the same robust frame as Tiny, it is designed for occasional use in cabins, boats, forest plots and off-grid locations. With separate containers for urine and solid waste, no electronics and no fan, Weekend Prime is silent, reliable and easy to maintain.
We also offer Privy, which is the perfect upgrade for your existing outhouse or if you want to build your own toilet solution as a DIY project. Privy is easily mounted on an existing outhouse bench. Over the years, many creative users have shown different installation options, such as converted vans, buses or tiny houses.
When it comes to waste handling, you as the user become more involved in the process compared with an incinerating toilet, and you can of course reuse your waste if you wish. It is easy to compost the solid waste and use the urine as plant fertiliser, preferably with our Ejector Tank. Are you looking for a hygienic and user-friendly toilet solution? Then you should definitely check whether one of our urine-diverting solutions is right for you.

Urine toilet
Pee is our urine toilet and is intended only for handling urine. This toilet is a good complement for anyone who wants to increase the capacity of their incinerating toilet. With Pee, you can easily collect and use the urine as plant fertiliser. Do you need a toilet for convenient urine handling or extra capacity for your existing incinerating toilet? Then Pee is the right choice.
