FAQ Urine Diverting Toilets
Do you need permission from the environmental office to install a urine-diverting toilet?
Yes, all municipalities have specific forms. Visit your municipality’s website to find the form you need to complete in order to apply for permission.
The urine hose needs to be replaced. Which one fits?
For Villa, the item number is 11131-01, and for Tiny with urine pipe, the item number is 1343-01. These can be found on our website.
Can a fresh air vent be installed in the space where a urine-diverting toilet is located?
Yes, it can, but it has no effect on the toilet’s functionality.
Does Fan 12–15 V (Item no. 10725-02) fit my old Separett?
Fan 12–15 V (Item no. 10725-02) fits:
- Villa series 9010, 9020 (12 V), 9011, 9210
- Weekend 7010
- Old Husqvarna models: Q41, Q50, Q51
- Chalet
This fan has replaced the previous fan with item number 10725-01.
If you have an older model, you may need to replace the battery eliminator and/or the 12 V cable, as the plug has been changed.
NOTE! Always check the airflow direction marker on the fan before installation.
Are spare parts available for my old urine-diverting toilet?
Villa 9000 started being sold in the early 2000s, and spare parts for this model are available on our website.
Do you have an old Husqvarna, Chalet or Villa 6000/6200?
Congratulations on your toilet having worked for over 25 years – what a great investment! :) We have a very limited number of spare parts, as these models stopped being manufactured in the late 1990s, which is over 25 years ago. We hope you understand this.
However, we would very much like to keep you as a customer in the Separett family, and if you have had your Separett for 25 years, it may be time to make another good investment for the future. Why not take a look at our website/webshop or visit one of our retailers?
You can find the spare parts we still have available for older models under the tab ACCESSORIES & OTHER --> Spare Parts.
I have a problem with odour in the toilet space. What is wrong?
Normally, no odour occurs indoors when you have a urine-diverting toilet solution from Separett, provided that it has a power supply and the fan is working as it should. If odour occurs, please do the following:
- Clean/check the fan grille – it is located in front of the fan on the inside of the toilet. Clean the grille by wiping/rinsing it off.
- Check that the urine drain is not blocked by pouring one litre of water into the urine bowl and letting it run through the toilet.
- Check that the fan grille/wind cowl on the ventilation outlet is not blocked. If the toilet is correctly installed, there should also be an insect screen on/under the grille/wind cowl. Check that this is not blocked and clean it by wiping/rinsing it off.
- Check that all joints on the ventilation duct inside the space are properly sealed with silicone and that the fan is working as it should.
- If you have a PAX fan installed, this may affect the function of the fan.
Can the risk of deposits/blockages in the urine drain be reduced?
Yes, we recommend rinsing with a little water after each use and using Drain Cleaner 5-pack (Item no. 1118-01), which is a biological tablet placed in the urine bowl. The tablet breaks down and the enzymes help prevent problems with urine deposits in the drain pipe. If you still experience a blockage in the urine drain, use a standard drain cleaner to dissolve it.
Does the urine drain freeze in winter?
Normally not. Urine freezes at approximately -5°C. Make sure that the urine drain has a slope all the way, and preferably use Ø50 mm pipe outdoors if the toilet is to be used during winter. It is also a good idea to insulate the parts of the drain that run outdoors and pour a little methylated spirit into the urine bowl when leaving the cottage.
Does the urine-diverting toilet work in a cold space?
Yes, our urine-diverting toilets are not dependent on room temperature, as composting does not take place inside the toilet.
Does urine diversion work for EVERYONE, small children, women and men?
Yes. A urine-diverting Child Seat is available to purchase as an accessory. The Child Seat fits Villa, Dry Toilet, Rescue Camping and most other urine-diverting toilets. In our experience, children in the family also quickly learn how to sit correctly.
The urine bowl has been developed and tested with both older and younger women to ensure that the urine ends up in the right place. Separett Villa also comes with a removable extension for the urine bowl.
Men should always sit down to urinate on Separett’s urine-diverting toilets.
Which is best? Routing the ventilation pipe up through the roof or out through the wall?
It is easiest to route it out through a wall. Roof penetrations are a little more difficult to install, but they are an option if wall installation is not possible. In that case, you need to purchase a roof flashing for the roof penetration.
To avoid odour in areas that are used frequently, the exhaust air should not end up near an entrance, patio or fresh air intake. Also remember to seal all indoor joints with silicone to prevent odour from seeping out along the way. This applies specifically to urine-diverting toilets.
How difficult is it to install a urine-diverting toilet solution yourself?
Everything is relative and depends on how experienced you are with DIY work at home. In addition to routed electricity, or alternatively power from a leisure battery or solar panels for Villa and Tiny, two holes need to be made in the wall. One hole is for the urine drain, which is to be routed to a collection container, such as an Ejector Tank, and one hole is for the ventilation duct, which is routed either through the wall or through the roof. For simplicity, we recommend routing the ventilation duct through the wall. Roof penetrations are a little more difficult to install, but they are an option if wall installation is not possible. In that case, you need to purchase a roof flashing for the roof penetration.
The toilet solution also needs to be secured. Either with a wall bracket (included with some models) or secured to the floor with adhesive or screws. Installation videos and installation manuals can be found on each toilet’s product page.
Can urine be connected to the greywater system? (Bathing, dishwashing and laundry)
Regulations vary between municipalities. Contact your municipality for guidance.
Is there anything in particular I should consider when storing my urine-diverting toilet for a longer period? (Winter storage)
We recommend keeping the fan running at all times, as this keeps the house dry and extends the service life of the fan. If the fan has to be switched off, put the lid on and remove the latrine container from the toilet, or empty the container and insert a new bag. Otherwise, there is a risk of unpleasant odours developing and flies entering and laying eggs.
Urine freezes at approximately -5°C, so if the toilet is to be used during winter, we recommend an external urine drain of Ø50 mm. The larger dimension is to reduce the risk of the urine drain freezing and bursting. You can also insulate the parts of the urine pipe that run outdoors, and pour a little methylated spirit into the urine bowl when leaving the cottage.
What cleaning maintenance is required for a urine-diverting toilet?
In addition to regular wet wiping of the toilet surfaces, the easily accessible fan filter inside the toilet should be cleaned regularly, as should the insect screen at the end of the ventilation pipe.
Make sure that the ventilation pipes are sealed with silicone during installation.
The urine hose needs to be replaced. Which one fits?
These can be ordered via our webshop or through one of our retailers.
Urine Hose 11131-01 fits Villa and Tiny with urine pipe, as well as older models with urine pipe.
Urine Hose 10218-01 fits Dry Toilet.
What is the easiest way to fit the hose onto a dry toilet?
Use a little soft soap to reduce friction, and it will be easier.
Does it smell indoors?
No. The fan runs continuously and odours never enter the room. Make sure that the ventilation pipes are sealed with silicone during installation. The easily accessible fan filter inside the toilet should be cleaned regularly, as should the insect net at the end of the ventilation pipe.
Does it smell outdoors?
Because urine and faeces are not mixed, a latrine odour never occurs from a Separett toilet. However, a certain odour may be noticeable outdoors when the toilet is being used and for a short while afterwards. If the ventilation can be routed out on the back of the house, it is normally sufficient to simply go through the wall. If it is routed out towards a patio or the front of the house, it should be routed higher up or through the roof.
Will there be an odour when spreading urine?
It depends on how much the urine has been diluted. If our Ejector Tank 50L (Item no. 1013-03), which automatically mixes 1 litre of urine with 8 litres of water, is used, an odour may be noticeable for a short while after watering, but it disappears quickly. If you flush with additional water, spread it in the evening, or spread it when it rains, the odour disappears more quickly.
How much air does the fan extract?
There is no simple answer, as the airflow depends entirely on how much air enters the toilet room, how long the ventilation pipe is, and how many bends it has.
The urine drains away very slowly. Is something wrong?
Normally, urine drains away at a good rate. If you are having problems with drainage, you can check the following:
- Does the urine drain outside the toilet have a sufficient slope? We recommend a slope of 1 cm per meter of urine drain.
- Check that any collection container or infiltration bed is not full.
- Over time, there is a risk that the inside of the urine drain may become coated with salts and minerals.
Use our drain cleaning tablets (item no. 1118-01) to prevent the formation of deposits. If this has already happened, use a standard drain cleaner!
Does the ventilation pipe need to be insulated?
The Separett Villa 9000 series has a condensation collector in the ventilation connector, which directs any condensation and rainwater to the built-in urine drain and thus out together with the urine.
On Tiny, the ventilation opening is directed downwards. However, if the ventilation pipe is routed vertically upwards, a small hole (approx. 8 mm) needs to be drilled at the lowest point of the ventilation, so that any condensation water can drain out.
Remember to place a container under the hole if it is located on the pipe inside the house.
Can the toilet be used without running the fan?
We do not recommend using the toilet without the fan. Without the fan, there is a high risk of unpleasant odours developing and flies entering and laying eggs. Keeping the fan running helps keep odours away, keeps the space dry, and extends the service life of the fan.
Does a water trap have to be installed on the urine drain?
Normally not. Any slight odour that may enter through the urine drain is vented out by the ventilation with the help of the fan. The water trap is only installed if there is an odour in the toilet space, or if the exhaust air smells of sewage to the point that it causes a disturbance.
You can find the water trap in our webshop.
Is an extra ventilation fan needed if there is a shower in the toilet room?
No! All ventilation from the bathroom/toilet room should be vented out through the toilet fan, which runs continuously. Wall-mounted fans in the same space as the toilet solution risk creating negative pressure in the space and preventing the toilet from venting out the small amount of odour that forms from the dry waste.
Can the ventilation duct be routed through a chimney?
No, we advise against this. Moisture from the toilet space can damage the mortar joints, and if a plastic pipe is routed inside a chimney that is in use, the plastic will melt when any fireplace is used. We also recommend that the ventilation duct should be easily accessible in case leaves or other material get into the ventilation pipe.
Do you need to install a fresh air vent in the space where a Separett urine-diverting toilet, such as Villa, is located?
No, you do not. As a rule, our urine-diverting toilets do not need an extra air intake vent and work well with the room’s standard fresh air supply (window vents, gaps under doors, etc.). Keep in mind that you should not have a separate wall-mounted fan (such as a PAX fan) in the same space where the toilet is installed.
Are there urine drains longer than the 2-meter section available, and can you use a longer urine hose than the one supplied?
No – the urine drain is supplied in 2-meter sections. With a hose, it is difficult to achieve a consistent slope all the way. If you need to install a longer urine drain, we recommend choosing a rigid PVC pipe instead. Indoors, we recommend Ø32 or 40 mm drain pipes, and outdoors Ø50 or 75 mm drain pipes. This is to ensure good gravity flow from the toilet to the urine handling system.
