FAQ Incinerating Toilets
Is it okay to switch off the power when leaving the cabin?
If the power to the cabin is switched off, the toilet must be disconnected from the exhaust air pipe. The exhaust air pipe should then be sealed to prevent cold and damp air from entering the toilet space.
If the exhaust air pipe is not sealed, cold and moisture may enter the toilet and damage the electrical components.
Under the Support → Long-term storage tab, you can read more about how to store your toilet safely.
What should you do when closing the cabin for winter or switching off the toilet for a longer period? (Long-term storage)
If you are going away for a longer period or closing your holiday home for winter, you should make sure to clean your toilet thoroughly and disconnect it from the exhaust air duct. You should also seal the exhaust air duct so that cold and damp air cannot enter the space where the toilet is located. If moisture enters the toilet, electrical components, among other things, may be damaged.
Read more about our recommendation for long-term storage here.
How long does the incineration phase take?
The incineration time consists of three phases.
Heating phase
30–60 minutes
Incineration phase (550°C)
Small programme: approx. 15 minutes
Large programme: approx. 40 minutes
Cooling phase
Approx. 60 minutes.
What happens if there is a power cut while incineration is in progress?
In the event of a power cut, the toilet’s built-in battery is activated and continues to power the fan and display. The fan therefore continues to ventilate the toilet and helps ensure that the temperature drops in a safe and controlled manner.
How much space does an incinerating toilet take up?
Separett toilets are 395 mm wide, 535 mm high and 635 mm long. It is important to know that, when installing these toilets, the ventilation pipes take up some space. For example, if the pipes are installed so that they go straight out through the wall behind the toilet, there must be at least 100 mm between the toilet and the external wall. If the pipe is instead installed indoors and routed up and out through the roof, the 90° bend must fit behind the toilet, and in that case at least 300 mm is needed behind the toilet.
You also need to consider the space in front of the toilet so that you can sit comfortably, and so that you can easily sit down in front of the toilet to empty the ash pan. When the ash pan is removed, it takes up approximately 30 cm of extra space in front of the toilet. It may be a good idea to have at least 120 cm of space in front of the toilet.
Taking these measurements into account when installing the toilet makes it easier to carry out servicing or disconnect the toilet for winter storage. These are only our recommendations to make it comfortable to sit on the toilet and to make it possible to clean it easily.
When should an incinerating toilet be switched off? Can you be away for, for example, 4 weeks and leave it running?
The toilet can be left running for approximately 4 weeks without being switched off. If you are going to be away for several months, we recommend switching off the toilet and preparing it for long-term storage/winter storage. Likewise, if you leave the toilet for a shorter period and want to switch it off to protect against possible lightning strikes, you should take the following steps:
- Switch off the toilet and unplug it.
- Pull the toilet away from the wall so that it is no longer connected to the exhaust pipe.
- Seal the exhaust pipe so that cold and damp air does not enter the toilet space and risk damaging the electronics inside the toilet.
What is the function of the O-rings?
The O-rings are fitted around the connector on the back of the toilet. Their purpose is to seal between the connector and the ventilation pipe to prevent smoke and warm odour from entering the toilet space. Use the O-ring that best fits your ventilation pipes.
O-rings can be purchased on our website: O-ring 5 mm/3 mm x 94 mm (Item no. 11879-01).
We are switching from a urine-diverting toilet to an incinerating toilet. Can the same ventilation pipe be used?
It depends on the pipe dimension and design. An incinerating toilet requires a Ø110 mm ventilation pipe, while a urine-diverting toilet only requires Ø75 mm. The incinerating toilet also requires a fresh air vent placed on an external wall in the toilet space. It is extremely important that the incinerating toilet is installed correctly.
The incinerating toilet can be installed in three different ways. See the different options in the installation manual, which can be found on the product page for each toilet.
What degree of slope is acceptable when installing an incinerating toilet?
Our recommendation is that the toilet should stand level. If the angle is too great, the toilet may become unstable and the connection to the ventilation pipe may be difficult to seal properly. We have not set an upper limit for the slope; instead, you need to determine whether the toilet stands securely and make sure that the connection to the pipe is properly sealed.
Do I need to apply for permission to install an incinerating toilet?
Yes, all municipalities have specific forms that must be completed in order to apply for permission. The form can usually be found on your municipality’s website. Please note that requirements and fees vary between municipalities.
Your roof flashing states that it is for tile/felt roofs. Does the roof flashing also work for metal roofs?
The roof flashing also works for metal roofs, but it places higher demands on fastening, installation and sealing. Use a flexible sealant that can withstand heat.
How often does the battery need to be replaced?
The service life is around 5 years for this type of battery. After that, the length of time the battery can power the electronics starts to decrease, regardless of whether it is charged. Keeping the battery continuously charged is good for its service life, and if the toilet is switched off during winter, it is a good idea to connect it for a few hours occasionally so that the battery can charge. In general, this type of battery should not remain unused for longer than 3 months.
If the toilet is over 5 years old, it may be a good idea to switch to battery operation occasionally and make sure that it works.
My toilet tilts forwards when I sit down. What could be causing this?
If your toilet tilts forwards, this may be because the exhaust ventilation is not properly secured to the wall and the connector at the back of the toilet has not been pushed all the way into the exhaust pipe.
There are 2 O-rings on the connector: one 3 mm and one 5 mm. If the connector cannot be pushed all the way into the exhaust pipe, this may be because the thicker O-ring is obstructing it. In that case, push this O-ring all the way in towards the rear panel of the toilet, and then push the connector all the way in so that it seals properly.
Where do I take my toilet for servicing?
You take the toilet for servicing to a Separett-authorised service partner.
You can find your nearest service location on our partner map.
Do you have an energy label for your electric/incinerating toilets?
We do not have an energy label. The products/product categories that are legally required to have energy labelling are regulated by the EU. At present, there is no requirement for energy labelling of incinerating toilets.
How much energy does the incinerating toilet consume?
Separett Family II consumes between 1.7–2.5 kWh per visit.
Separett Nova I and II consume between 1.8–2.0 kWh per visit.
Where can I buy bags for the incinerating toilet?
Bags for the incinerating toilet can be purchased either on our website, www.separett.com, or from one of our retailers.
How does an incinerating toilet work?
An incinerating toilet burns the waste products at a high temperature, reducing them to a minimal amount of ash. This is usually about one coffee cup of ash for 4 people and one week of use. The odour-free and biodegradable ash can be used as garden fertiliser or disposed of with household waste.
The incineration takes place using a heating coil (element), which heats a closed incineration chamber to approximately 550°C. The exhaust gases from the incineration are led outdoors through a ventilation pipe. The urine evaporates, and the faeces/toilet paper are burned to ash.
How do I submit a fault report?
If you have a problem and need help with a product, you submit a fault report by completing this form: Fault Report.
It is extremely important that the form is completed with as much detail as possible so that you can receive the right help. Once the form has been completed, click “Send” and we will then contact you regarding further action.
Can any 110 mm pipes be used for installation?
No, plastic pipes should be used to ensure optimal airflow for incinerating toilets.
We advise against using SPIRO pipes or similar. If these are used, we cannot guarantee the functionality of the toilet, and Separett’s product warranty will therefore not apply.
Does the ventilation pipe have to be 110 mm in diameter all the way?
Yes. The ventilation pipes must have a diameter of 110 mm all the way.
This is a prerequisite for the toilet to function as it should and for the warranty to apply.
NOTE! For the warranty to apply, our wind cowl and 90° long bend must also be installed.
Is everything needed to install the incinerating toilet included in the package?
No, you need to supplement it with pipes for the exhaust air duct (chimney) and an air vent for incoming air. Our ventilation kit contains everything you need for correct installation of the incinerating toilet. Make sure to carefully follow the installation instructions provided. You can also find them on the product page for each incinerating toilet.
Is it difficult to install an incinerating toilet yourself?
Everything is relative and depends on knowledge and experience.
However, it is very important that the installation is carried out correctly to ensure that the toilet solution functions as it should. We have three installation options that we recommend and approve for our incinerating toilets.
- The incinerating toilet must be able to be connected to the mains via a plug – 230 V.
- You need to make a hole in the wall for adequate air supply.
- You also need to make a hole in the wall to lead out the exhaust air duct (chimney) and route it along the outside wall to a point above the roof.
See the respective toilet for updated installation instructions.
We really must emphasise how important the installation is for the functionality of the toilet. If the installation is not correct or does not follow our recommendations, the warranty does not apply.
Why does it smell bad outdoors when the toilet is in the incineration phase?
The catalyst in the toilet filters out most bad odours, and the air that is discharged should only smell “warm” or like “burnt wood”.
If the discharged air smells bad, this is probably due to an incorrect installation that needs to be corrected, or the catalyst being clogged and in need of cleaning.
Does the ventilation pipe become hot?
No, the normal ventilation temperature in the exhaust pipe is between 30–40°C.
If the exhaust air reaches 65°C for more than 40 seconds, the toilet will shut down and an error message will appear on the toilet’s panel. This is then most likely due to insufficient intake air.
What is the noise level of the fan on an incinerating toilet during incineration?
During ongoing incineration, the noise level is approximately 55 dB(A).
Can I only use your incineration bags?
Our bags have been developed and adapted for our incinerating toilets. To guarantee function and quality, we recommend using only our bags.
Do I need to start an incineration programme after each visit?
Yes. It is very important to start an incineration programme after each visit, even if you have only urinated. An incineration programme should also be started even if the toilet is already incinerating.
How many consecutive visits can the incinerating toilet handle?
Both Separett Basic and Separett Family are designed to handle toilet waste from a household of up to 6 people. The toilet can be used whenever needed, with no requirement for “waiting time”.
If more than 6 people are using the toilet for a shorter period, we recommend emptying the ash pan and keeping an eye on the amount in it.
A Pee 1020 urine toilet (item no. 1264-01) is an excellent complement to the incinerating toilet and significantly increases its capacity by handling the urine separately.
What power does the fan use when an incinerating toilet is in standby mode?
Both Separett Family II and Nova consume approximately 0.4 Wh in standby mode.
What can be disposed of in the incinerating toilet?
Just like in a standard flush toilet: urine, faeces and toilet paper. Other waste, such as sanitary products, may damage components in the toilet.
Can an incinerating toilet be used while it is incinerating?
Yes, that is not a problem. Make sure to complete all steps, even if the incineration process is already in progress.
- Place a bag in the collection bowl.
- Press down the flush handle and make sure that the bag with toilet waste slides down into the incineration chamber.
- Start an incineration programme.
The toilet can be used whenever it needs to be used, with no requirement for “waiting time” or similar.
How many people can use your incinerating toilets?
Our incinerating toilets are designed to handle use by a family of up to six people.
How do I handle the ash from an incinerating toilet?
The ash can be spread in flower beds or disposed of with household waste. The ash is odour-free and bacteria-free. Make sure that the ash has cooled down before disposing of it.
For safety, check whether there are any restrictions in your municipality
How often does the ash pan need to be emptied?
Our incinerating toilets remind you when it is time to empty the ash pan. If more than 6 people are using the toilet during a period, we recommend manually checking the amount of waste in the ash pan at regular intervals.
At what temperature does the overheating protection trip, and why?
If the air in the space inside the toilet (outside the combustion chamber) reaches 90°C, the overheating protection trips.
The overheating protection may trip if, for example, the bag has not been flushed down properly and has become trapped, if there is a blockage in the exhaust pipe, if the toilet is incorrectly installed so that the air cannot escape properly, or if something has become caught in the flushing mechanism.
The overheating protection is a safety measure.
The temperature on the display shows a higher temperature than the actual room temperature?
The room temperature shown on the panel does not refer to the temperature in the toilet space, but to the temperature of the control board inside the toilet.
Does the reset button for the overheating protection pop out again as soon as I press it in, even though the toilet has cooled down completely?
If the overheating protection trips again after you have pressed it back in and the toilet has cooled down, there may be a fault with the overheating protection.
In that case, we recommend that you submit a fault report on our website under Service – Fault Report.
If the toilet is warm, wait until it has cooled down and then press the overheating protection back in again.
How far should the reset button for the overheating protection be pressed in?
When pressing in the overheating protection, you should hear a clicking sound, and in the pressed-in position, approximately 1 mm of the white pin should be visible.
In the triggered position, approximately 2–3 mm of the white pin is visible.
Does an incinerating toilet require any maintenance?
Yes, like other technical appliances, an incinerating toilet needs to be maintained in order to function well over time. In the user manual on each product page, you will find specific maintenance steps for each incinerating toilet. In general, however, two things need to be done at regular intervals. The toilets will remind you when it is time for each step.
To extend the service life and ensure proper function, we also recommend that servicing is carried out at regular intervals (every one to two years, depending on usage). You can read more about servicing in the service menu.
What does it cost to have a service carried out on your incinerating toilets?
A basic service costs from SEK 3,495 in 2026 and takes between 2–3 hours to carry out. You can find information about what is included in a service and how to proceed under Service.
Servicing the toilet at regular intervals (every year for permanent use, and every other or every third year for holiday homes, depending on usage) ensures that the toilet works as it should when needed and extends its service life.
Can incinerating toilets be placed next to a shower/bathtub?
We recommend following the guidelines for our certification, i.e. the directives from Svensk Elstandard. If the shower does not have a shower tray, the boundary is a distance of 120 cm from the shower head.
The toilet should also preferably be 10 cm above the floor, or have a fixed wall between it and the shower, where water does not run out onto the floor or splash onto the product from the shower nozzle.
Do I need to apply for permission to install an incinerating toilet?
Yes, all municipalities have specific forms. Visit your municipality’s website to find the form you need to complete in order to apply for permission. Please note that requirements and fees vary between municipalities.
