Installation and Maintenance of Urine-Diverting Toilets
Easy installation and low maintenance
One of the greatest benefits offered by urine-diverting toilets is their easy installation and minimal maintenance requirements. Whether it is a remote cabin, a tiny home or a more traditional home, installing a toilet such as Separett Villa is simple and straightforward. This helps ensure the best possible performance and long-lasting use.
Easy installation in any location
Unlike traditional flush toilets, which require extensive pipework, sewage systems or a connection to a municipal wastewater system, urine-diverting toilets require very little infrastructure. This makes them a versatile solution for both self-sufficient cabins and modern homes. Separett’s goal is to create a system that is easy to install, even without specialist knowledge.
The main components involved in installation are:
- Ventilation system: The toilet requires a small ventilation pipe that directs air outdoors and prevents odours from forming. The pipe can be easily installed through an external wall or roof.
- Urine diversion: In urine-diverting toilets, liquid is directed to a separate container or drain, from where it can be emptied manually or connected to a greywater system.
Once the ventilation and urine diversion have been installed, the toilet itself can be put into use quickly. Separett’s design ensures that installation is simple, even in remote or unusual locations. This makes urine-diverting toilets an ideal solution for both permanent homes and mobile applications, such as motorhomes and boats.
Minimal need for pipework
Urine-diverting toilets do not require complex pipework like standard flush toilets. Since no water is used at all, there is no need for sewer pipes – and no risk of pipes freezing or leaking in cold conditions. This means lower installation costs and less maintenance in the future.
Separett’s urine-diverting system offers flexibility – liquid can be collected in a container for emptying or directed to a larger tank or greywater system. This makes installation possible even in places without a water supply or sewer network.
Regular maintenance – easy and simple
Maintaining a urine-diverting toilet is much easier than is often imagined. In most cases, maintenance is limited to emptying the solid waste container, which is done every few weeks or months depending on use. In Separett Villa, the solid waste container is easy to access and clean to handle.
- Emptying the compost: The dry, decomposed waste is light and easy to handle. Depending on local regulations and your own preferences, it can be disposed of with mixed waste or used as compost in the garden.
- Urine disposal: Urine diversion keeps the solid waste dry, which improves composting. The urine container should be emptied regularly, or if it is connected to a drain, the urine can be led to a greywater system.
Overall, maintenance of Separett’s urine-diverting toilets is straightforward and easy. Regularly check that the ventilation is working properly, as unobstructed airflow is essential for odour control and composting.
Winter storage
If you only use the toilet for part of the year, for example at a summer cabin, it is a good idea to prepare the system for the winter season. Separett toilets are designed to function in different climates, but before longer periods of non-use, a few steps should be taken:
- Disconnecting the ventilation: During long-term storage or the cold season, the ventilation pipe should be disconnected to prevent cold air from entering the toilet.
- Cleaning the system: Before storage, both the solid waste container and the liquid container should be emptied and cleaned to avoid deposits and odours.
With these simple steps, the toilet remains in good condition and is ready for use when you return. Separett’s durable design ensures that the toilet works reliably regardless of the season.
Winter use
When used in winter, external pipes should have an internal diameter of at least 35 mm. The earlier you change to a larger pipe, the lower the risk of freezing. You will need an adapter sleeve for the transition, and suitable sleeves are readily available from hardware stores, plumbing suppliers and online shops. Remember to seal both ends of the sleeve and all other joints with silicone.
If the temperature drops below -9°C, we recommend insulating external pipes with pipe insulation, which is available from most builders’ merchants. If the temperature drops below -18°C, it may be necessary to install a heating cable around the pipe to prevent freezing.
Durable and reliable design
One of the most significant strengths of Separett’s urine-diverting toilets is their long service life. They are made from high-quality materials that ensure reliable performance year after year. The need for repairs is low and maintenance is simple, allowing you to enjoy a water-saving and ecological solution with peace of mind.
Whether it is for a self-sufficient cabin, tiny house or permanent home, Separett’s urine-diverting toilets are built to last. Their simple design and low maintenance requirements ensure that the toilet works efficiently and reliably for many years.
