FAQ Handling the Waste
Is composted waste safe to use?
Properly composted waste is safe to use. During the composting process, pathogens are destroyed, and the finished compost can be used as fertiliser for non-edible plants. Urine-diverting toilets support a sustainable and safe circular economy.
What toilet paper should be used in the urine-diverting toilet?
Use standard toilet paper, the same type used for a flush toilet.
Does ground infiltration smell?
Normally not. The spreading takes place underground. If no water trap is installed and the toilet’s fan grille has not been cleaned, a certain odour may occur in specific cases. This is mainly during warm summer days. In that case, flush the urine drain with a couple of litres of water, clean the fan grille and, if necessary, install a water trap to resolve the issue.
What should I do when the latrine container in my urine-diverting toilet is full?
- Place the lid on the container.
- Tilt the container towards you and use the sliding surfaces to lift the container smoothly out of the toilet.
- Place it in a suitable location outdoors.
- Cover the contents of the container with a few spadefuls of soil.
- Leave the container standing with the lid slightly ajar for at least 12 months.
For safety, check what applies in your municipality, as regulations may vary between municipalities.
Should anything be added to a urine-diverting toilet?
No, when the container is in the toilet, the latrine waste and paper should only dry and settle. Never use bark or bulking material, as it may contain fly larvae, which can lead to fly problems. Instead, we recommend using Absorb (Item no. 1060-02), which is placed in the bag inside the container. Absorb helps keep the latrine waste dry and odour-free.
Can toilet paper be disposed of in the latrine container of the urine-diverting toilet?
Yes, toilet paper helps keep the container dry during use and makes handling easier after the storage period. Keep in mind that the container fills up more quickly with paper.
Can compostable bags be used in a urine-diverting toilet?
Yes, we recommend our compostable bags made from corn starch. These are specially designed to withstand the conditions both in the toilet and during the storage period. After that, the bag slowly breaks down in the soil or compost. Our recommendation is to use it for a maximum of 30 days and not to lift the bag out, but to take the entire container instead, to avoid any accidents when emptying.
Should a bag be used in the latrine container of the urine-diverting toilet?
Yes, all toilets are supplied with bags, as this makes cleaning the container easier.
What slope should the urine drain have?
We recommend a slope of approximately 1 centimetre per metre. The important thing is that there is a slope all the way. The greater the slope, the lower the risk of deposits forming and the urine drain freezing and bursting.
Where should the urine from a urine-diverting toilet be routed?
There are three options for the urine drain:
- Route the urine to a tank, such as the Separett Ejector Tank.
- Route the urine to an infiltration system, such as the Ecovault Infiltration Chamber.
- Connect the urine drain to the washbasin or shower drain.
You should check with your municipality’s environmental office which solution is permitted and suitable.
How do you make a simple infiltration system?
The simplest and most reliable way is to use the Ecovault Infiltration Chamber. Instead of building a traditional soak pit with only gravel, Ecovault creates a structured underground infiltration space that helps disperse urine and light greywater more evenly into the surrounding soil.
Always ask your environmental office for permission and advice regarding urine handling.
Are all latrine bags from Separett compostable?
No, not all latrine bags in our range are compostable. We offer compostable bags for several of our toilet models, such as Villa, Tiny, Weekend Prime and Uno. The compostable bags have item nos. 1127-02, 1337-01, 1338-01 and 1365-01. The bags for Tiny also fit Weekend Prime.
How long does it take for a Separett Bio Bag to decompose?
There is no simple answer, as the decomposition time of the bag is affected by the biological activity in the soil or compost, as well as exposure to sunlight. Since the Separett Bio Bag is designed to withstand the long time spent in the container, decomposition in soil or compost is also slow.
It decomposes faster if the contents are emptied out and the bag is placed separately in the compost.
