How do I clean my urine-diverting toilet, and what should I keep in mind?

Cleaning & maintaining your urine-diverting toilet – our guide

Cleaning a urine-diverting toilet is a very important topic and is often taken far too lightly. It is not only important from a hygiene perspective, but also contributes significantly to the longevity of the toilet. In the long term, it saves you a lot of effort and trouble and helps keep our products in use for longer. In this blog post, we look at the most important points when cleaning our toilets and give you a few helpful tips.

Cleaning the urine-diverting insert, the interior and the solid waste container

These components differ only slightly across all our models and are therefore almost identical in terms of care and cleaning. For all toilets, the following applies: only use water, soap or standard wet wipes to avoid potential damage.

The urine-diverting insert can be cleaned easily with a wet wipe or a damp cloth. The cleaning frequency depends on the degree of soiling and the number of users – anything from once every two days to twice daily may be appropriate. Important: Do not dispose of the used wet wipe in the solid waste container, in order to avoid unnecessary moisture and ensure complete separation.

If the toilet is installed and used correctly, the inside of the toilet largely remains clean and only needs to be dusted occasionally. The same applies to the solid waste container: since it should always be used with a bag, it rarely becomes dirty and only needs to be dusted from time to time.

Cleaning the urine container

Regular cleaning of the urine container is especially important to prevent unpleasant odours and to ensure the long-term function of the level indicator in the Separett Tiny.

The container should be cleaned thoroughly every 1–2 months. Fill it with lukewarm water and add vinegar or citric acid, following the dosage instructions on the packaging. Leave the liquid to work for 15–20 minutes, pour it out and then rinse the container thoroughly with water. This removes urine scale and allows the float of the level indicator to move freely again. In the case of stubborn dirt, the process may need to be repeated.

To extend the service life of the container and prevent damage caused by urine scale, we recommend using our biological drain cleaner. This significantly slows the formation of urine scale and neutralises unpleasant odours.

Cleaning the urine drain

The urine drain in models such as Villa or Tiny with urine drainage is a central component in many closed toilet systems. Proper care is essential to ensure full functionality and a clean user experience.

Cleaning every 3 months reliably prevents the formation of urine scale and extends the service life of the pipes.

To clean it, pour a glass of vinegar diluted with water into the drain and then scrub it thoroughly with a flexible pipe brush with plastic bristles (NO METAL!) – from the toilet to the outlet at the urine tank. For this step, it may be necessary to dismantle the pipe. Then rinse thoroughly with water.

Optional:

If possible, seal the outlet of the urine pipe and fill the entire pipe with water and vinegar. Leave the mixture to work and then clean through the pipe with the brush as described above. Afterwards, rinse the pipe with water.

Here too, we recommend regularly using our biological drain cleaner to neutralise odours and prevent deposits.
