The secret behind long-lasting urine-diverting toilets: Why the material matters

The secret behind long-lasting urine-diverting toilets: Why the material matters

How innovation, materials and experience shape every urine-diverting toilet

At Separett, our mission has always been clear: to make everyday sanitation solutions sustainable and accessible – without water and without complicated installations. For almost half a century, we have been perfecting the technology behind waterless sanitation systems. In doing so, we combine Scandinavian design principles with high-quality engineering to develop durable and hygienic urine-diverting toilets for homes, holiday cabins and off-grid living.

Decades of innovation and development

From the very beginning, our founders had a clear goal: to create a solution for sanitation comfort in places where there are no water or sewage connections. What began as an innovative idea for a Nordic holiday home developed into a global brand known for its pioneering work in urine-diverting toilets and waterless toilet systems.

Over the years, we have continuously developed our urine-diverting toilets. We have introduced smarter separation systems, made ventilation more efficient and created designs that are functional while remaining deliberately simple. This long-term focus has made Separett one of the leading innovators in sustainable sanitation solutions.

Advanced manufacturing and materials for urine-diverting toilets

Today, Separett is part of the Lundahl & Hall Group, which includes several plastic manufacturing companies. This gives us specialist expertise and full control over the entire production chain – from the selection of raw materials to the final assembly of our urine-diverting toilets.

Our waterless urine-diverting toilets are manufactured using high-precision injection moulding. This process creates smooth, non-porous and highly durable surfaces. The toilet frames are also produced in this way. The result is products that are easy to clean, hygienic and designed for a long service life. Injection moulding tools are considerably more expensive than moulds for rotational moulding, but they make it possible to achieve consistent quality and a surface finish that cannot be reached with other methods.

By contrast, rotationally moulded products often have microscopic pores in the plastic. Over time, urine and dirt can settle in these pores, causing discolouration and odours that cannot be removed without damaging the surface. For this reason, we deliberately choose the more expensive but higher-quality injection moulding process. For our urine-diverting toilets, this is a long-term investment in reliability and hygiene.

A material like no other – developed for the urine-diverting toilet

In our urine-diverting toilets, we use a special plastic compound developed exclusively for Separett. This unique composition prevents the material damage that urine can cause in conventional plastics. The result is a material that retains its stability, colour and surface for many years – even under demanding off-grid conditions.

No other manufacturer uses this material. It has been developed specifically for our urine-diverting toilets and their applications, reflecting our commitment to quality and durability in every detail. This is why Separett urine-diverting toilets can be used for decades.

Continuous development for the future

At Separett, we see every urine-diverting toilet as part of a long-term development process. As with any modern product, even proven solutions can continue to be improved. Every new generation of our urine-diverting toilets is based on decades of experience, extensive testing, customer feedback and technological progress. Our goal is clear: to continue setting the standard for clean, sustainable and low-maintenance sanitation solutions – for generations to come.
