50 years of Separett – awards, innovation and global commitment

For fifty years, Separett has stood for well-designed solutions in the field of waterless urine-diverting toilets. What once began as a technical idea has developed into an internationally recognised approach that supports people in many different living situations – from campsites and tiny houses to regions without functioning infrastructure. In 2026, Separett proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, looking back on both achievements and the challenges that still lie ahead.

Awards for design, entrepreneurship and innovation

Over the years, Separett has received several awards for its work. These recognitions honour not only individual products, but above all the long-term commitment to functional, durable and user-friendly urine-diverting toilets. They include regional and international awards for product design, innovation and entrepreneurial development.

Such awards confirm our approach of combining technical simplicity with everyday usability. However, they are not an end in themselves, but an incentive to continue developing existing solutions and exploring new paths – always with a focus on reliable, waterless sanitation systems.

Practical help where it is needed – projects in Peru

In addition to product development and awards, Separett is also committed to work beyond traditional markets. One example is the collaboration with partner organisations in Peru, where waterless toilet systems are used in regions that lack access to sewer systems or a stable water supply.

In these areas, urine-diverting toilets are used in particular, as they function independently of infrastructure and can be adapted to local conditions. The projects show that technical solutions from Europe can also provide real practical benefits under completely different conditions – provided that they are robust, easy to understand and suitable for long-term use.

Why composting toilets and urine-diverting toilets matter

Around the world, approximately two billion people still live without access to a basic toilet solution. In relation to this figure, each individual project is only a small contribution. Even so, it is precisely these steps that make concrete improvements in everyday life possible.

Urine-diverting toilets offer an approach that does not require water or complex infrastructure. They are suitable both for remote regions and for modern living concepts such as tiny houses, off-grid locations or mobile applications. Their strength lies in the combination of technical simplicity, low maintenance and versatile use.

50 years of experience – and looking ahead

Separett’s 50th anniversary is not an endpoint, but a milestone. The past decades have shown how important it is to continuously question and develop solutions. New materials, improved separation systems and optimised ventilation concepts all feed into our work, as do feedback and experiences from users around the world.

Separett will continue working to improve waterless toilets, composting toilets and urine-diverting toilets in the future – for people who live consciously, are on the move or simply have no other option. Even if our own contribution may only be a drop in the ocean, the conviction remains: every functioning toilet makes a difference.
