Water is the source of life, an indispensable resource that flows through our planet, nourishing every living creature. Yet, despite its critical role, the world faces a growing water crisis, with billions of people living without access to clean and safe drinking water. To highlight and combat this global challenge, World Water Day is observed annually on March 22nd, a day established by the UN to focus on water-related issues and promote actions for sustainable water use.

Five facts about the water crisis

What do you know about the water crisis, and did you know that the water and sanitation crisis are interconnected? With unclean water and poor or nonexistent sanitation, this not only leads to a terrible way of life but also exposes people worldwide to vulnerability. Here are five facts about the water crisis you might not have known.

1. Over 2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. This affects not only their health but also their access to education and work opportunities.

2. Approximately 4.2 billion people live without access to adequate sanitation, increasing the risk of diseases related to water and sanitation.

3. Agriculture accounts for about 70% of all freshwater use globally, and inefficient use contributes to water scarcity.

4. Climate change exacerbates the water crisis, with extreme weather such as droughts and floods becoming more common, affecting the availability of clean water.

5. Every minute, a child dies from diseases caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation. This grim statistic underscores the urgency to act.

How can you save water?
