Maintain your toilet

To ensure that your toilet remains in top condition year after year, the simple solution is to perform proper maintenance.

Urine diverting toilets

For a compost and urine diverting toilet, the maintenance is essentially the same for all our products. Of course, certain steps may be added or omitted depending on which product you have. An important reminder is to always use mild detergent and a damp cloth. If you reuse your waste, it is especially important to use an environmentally friendly detergent.

Toilet and waste container

To avoid damage to the product, avoid strong chemicals and abrasive tools. Wipe all visible surfaces of the toilet thoroughly. When it comes to the inside, it's important to remove all parts that you can to access all areas. If you have a VILLA, you can unscrew the plate at the bottom of the toilet to access underneath it.

The waste container is cleaned in a similar manner to the toilet - use detergent and a damp cloth. A tip is to also mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and clean out the waste container with this as well. It can prevent any potential odor that may arise. Ensure that the container is completely dry before reinserting it into the toilet. Don't forget to insert a compostable bag.

Urine container and Urine tube

We recommend that the urine container should be emptied when the toilet informs you about this and should be cleaned after every third emptying or if there is an interruption in toilet use. Fill about ¼ of the urine container with water, close the lid, and shake vigorously to clean the inside of the container. Then pour out the water and you're done! Wipe the outside of the urine container with mild detergent and a damp cloth, let dry, and replace it in the toilet. A tip is to pour a little vinegar into the water before shaking the urine container, this can prevent any potential odor that may arise.

If you have a urine diverting toilet with a urine tube, we recommend that you pour some water or alternatively vinegar and water into the urine bowl at regular intervals and during long-term storage.

Cleaning the fan filter

The fan helps to reduce odor and should be kept clean for optimal function. Always check the fan according to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure good air circulation. Clean the fan thoroughly and make sure it is dry before replacing it. Follow the steps below:

1. Lift up the top part of the toilet (VILLA: ensure that the top part is locked in place)

2. Remove the fan filter

3. Rinse under lukewarm/hot water

4. Let dry

5. Replace the fan filter (TINY: a click is heard when it is in place)

6. Close the top part of the toilet (VILLA: press up the yellow locking tabs to lower the top part)

Incinerating toilets

If you have an incinerating toilet from Separett, old or new, the cleaning works almost the same for our different models. Of course, some steps may differ, so it's especially important to check the product manual for more specific maintenance instructions. You can find our product manuals here!

Toilet exterior and interior parts

Wipe the toilet externally and internally with a lightly dampened or well-wrung cloth with a little detergent. Do not flush the toilet with water, either externally or internally - as the combustion chamber and circuit board can be damaged.

Clean the toilet's drop hatch as needed. Use a lightly dampened cloth and follow up with detergent for stainless goods. This creates a film that prevents dirt from sticking easily and the bag slides down smoothly into the combustion chamber. Be especially careful with parts that meet high temperatures.

Cleaning the ashpan

Cleaning the ashpan should be done after two emptying’s. The toilet will notify when the ashpan needs to be emptied via the display. The cleaning is done to remove the crystals that form when the urine evaporates during combustion and because the steam gives the toilet an internal cleaning.

If the household consists of more than 6 people using the toilet, we recommend a manual check of the amount of ash at regular intervals

Clean the ashpan as follows:

1. Remove the ashpan and empty it

2. Pour 1L of water into the ashpan

3. Replace the ashpan back into the toilet

4. Run a BIG program

Cleaning the smoke pipe

Cleaning the smoke pipe should be done after 200 flushing’s. The display will notify you when it's time. Clean easily with the steel brush that came with the delivery. Make sure to brush far enough into the pipe. The handle of the brush should almost be at the opening of the pipe. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the soot that comes loose.
